How I Ship Original Artwork

Shipping fine art requires more than simply putting a painting in a box. An original painting is a one-of-a-kind work, and protecting it during transportation is an essential part of the collecting experience. For larger and higher-value paintings, I use custom-built wooden art crates designed specifically for fine art transportation. These crates provide protection from impact, handling, moisture and the challenges of long-distance travel.

Depending on the size, value and destination of the artwork, smaller paintings may be shipped using heavy-duty protective packaging, while international shipments may also have the option of being shipped rolled in a tube when appropriate.

Every shipment is assessed individually so that the packing and transportation method is suited to the artwork.

From My Parksville Studio to Your Door

My studio is now located in Parksville, British Columbia, on Vancouver Island. From the studio, artwork begins its journey with careful wrapping and preparation before being transferred to the appropriate art shipping or courier service.

For larger works, I work with professional fine-art crating and transportation services to create a secure shipping solution. For exhibitions and multiple-painting shipments, custom crates can be constructed specifically around the artwork and destination.

The goal is simple: your painting should arrive in the same condition in which it left the studio.

Custom Wooden Art Crates

For many original paintings, a custom wooden crate provides the highest level of protection.

The artwork is carefully secured inside the crate with protective materials designed to minimize movement and provide cushioning during transportation. For added protection, paintings can be sealed in waterproof wrapping before being placed inside the crate.

The crates themselves are substantial, reusable and built for the demands of transporting fine art over long distances.

I have been using custom art crates for many years, working with trusted Western Canadian crate makers and fine-art shipping professionals. My artwork has travelled in these crates to galleries, exhibitions and private collections across Canada and internationally.

Shipping Art Across Canada

I regularly ship original paintings from Vancouver Island to collectors throughout Canada.

Whether your painting is travelling to British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec or the Atlantic provinces, I can arrange an appropriate shipping solution based on the size and value of the artwork.

For collectors purchasing directly from the studio, I will provide shipping details and costs before the artwork leaves the studio.

International Art Shipping

Canadian art has a home far beyond Canada. I have shipped paintings internationally to collectors, galleries and exhibitions, including destinations in the United States, United Kingdom and Europe. International shipments require additional planning, including appropriate packing, transportation, customs documentation and delivery arrangements. I work with trusted carriers and art-handling partners to coordinate these shipments and will help guide you through the process from the studio to your destination. International shipping costs vary depending on the artwork, destination, dimensions and shipping method. A shipping quote can be provided before purchase or before your artwork is dispatched.

Your Artwork, Carefully Handled

Every original painting is inspected and prepared before leaving the studio. I take care to minimize unnecessary handling and ensure that the artwork is properly protected throughout the packing process. From the moment a painting is completed to the moment it arrives with its collector, its care continues.

The painting may have finished its journey on canvas, but its journey into your collection is just beginning.

What Happens After You Purchase?

Once you have purchased an original painting, I will confirm the shipping arrangements with you.

Depending on the artwork and destination, the process generally includes:

  1. Artwork inspection and preparation
  2. Protective wrapping and packing
  3. Custom crating or appropriate protective packaging
  4. Shipping and transportation arrangements
  5. Tracking and delivery coordination
  6. Delivery to your specified destination

For larger works or international shipments, I will work with you directly to determine the best shipping option.

Can Artwork Be Shipped Rolled?

In some circumstances, particularly for larger international shipments, a painting may be removed from its stretcher bars and carefully rolled for transportation. This can significantly reduce shipping volume and cost. However, the artwork must then be professionally re-stretched and, if necessary, re-framed at its destination. This option is discussed with the collector before shipping and is only used when appropriate for the particular artwork.

Collect Canadian Art with Confidence

Buying an original painting online should feel exciting, not complicated. When you collect a painting directly from my Parksville studio, you are not only acquiring an original piece of Canadian art. You are also receiving personal assistance throughout the purchasing and shipping process.

From Vancouver Island to Toronto, from Calgary to London, and from Canada to collectors around the world, I take great care to ensure that each painting makes the journey safely.
